خالد شاهين | Khalid Shahin

Khalid Shahin is a self taught Arabic Calligrapher and abstract artist, born in Palestine in 1966. His first painting initially were applications of the light-dark technique to the worldly objects around us. Through time he tried to combine and integrate Arabic calligraphy with his abstract paintings to reflect the fibre qualities of paint in dough. Using the color paint realities, he directed himself in the direction of abstract works.

Latifa Yousef is a Palestinian artist who spent her childhood in Gaza and now lives in Cairo. We spoke with her after the Gaza Freedom March.

Latifa: This painting is about the beginning of the First Intifada. I liked the sight of these young girls and boys, carrying the flag. It was the first time they could do this during the Israeli occupation. At first I called it “Palestinian disco”, because there are no discos, this is their disco – on the street!

Greg: I like how it mixes representation and abstraction. I’m also very fond of this next picture.
